Tie a FlyLipp into one of your favorite patterns and watch what happens. Suddenly, your fly swims up, swims down, darts from side-to-side. And the topwater bite? Unheard of. The action produced by FlyLipps is dramatic—and effective.

FlyLipps work great on saltwater patterns as well as freshwater patterns. Add a FlyLipp to Lefty’s Deceiver and you have a fly that swims naturally to the surface where it can pop and splash until you allow it to swim back down. Bob’s classic Clouser Minnow is no longer just a jig, it now swims up off the bottom and slowly swims back down. A FlyLipp tied into Popovic’s Surf Candy can cause the fly to dart erratically from side-to-side. Each package contains 10 FlyLipps—and endless possibilities.

FlyLipps are designed to fit hook sizes #4 to 2/0, but with slight modifications, they've been tied on patterns as small as #10 and as large as 4/0. They work great right from the package, but if you wish to modify your own, you can easily trim them into different shapes and sizes with scissors or nail clippers.

BASIC TYING INSTRUCTIONS: TYING FLYLIPP TO HOOK

Ascending tie: fly swims up

Descending tie: fly swims down

1) Wrap thread base halfway down the hook shank.

2) Apply a small drop of super glue to the groove in the FlyLipp, then place the FlyLipp on the hook shank in either ascending or descending position. Position FlyLipp approximately 1/16 of an inch behind the hook eye.

3) Tie on by tightly wrapping the full length of the FlyLipp shank. Wrap a few extra turns at the base of the FlyLipp blade for added support. You’re now ready to tie your favorite pattern.

Fishing with Lipped flys.

• Use your favorite loop knot to tie the fly to the tippet.

• To prevent line twists, and to ensure proper fly action, we strongly recommend fishing lipped flies with a small (#10) barrel swivel between the tippet and the rest of the leader.

• Lipped flies have plenty of action. Slower retrieves sometimes work better. Experiment.

• You can vary the amount of action a fly has by trimming the FlyLipp or tying a fuller/longer tie. Decrease action by trimming the FlyLipp with nail clippers. Try to trim the FlyLipp as symmetrical as possible.

• Many species of fish seem to hit topwater flies just below the surface. After a few quick “pops,” allow the fly to sink and strip a few times swimming the fly just below the surface.

• Since Lipped flies tied ascending style rise more quickly than other flies, they are less likely to get hung on structure or debris near the bottom.

• Experiment with floating, intermediate, and sinking lines. For example, topwater flies on an intermediate sinking line can cover the water column more efficiently.

• When fishing subsurface patterns using a quick retrieve, decrease the size of the Lipp. This will enable the fly to maintain a subtle fluttering of the “tail” during rapid retrieves.

Tuning your Lipped fly.

Your fly needs to be tuned to track straight and produce maximum action. Before fishing, and after each catch, drag the fly through the water using a steady sweeping motion of the rod. Your fly should have a good snake-like swimming action and track straight. It should not barrel roll to or favor either side. If it does, correct it by either shoving or rotating the lip toward the side to which the fly favors.

Shoving Method

Using your thumb and forefinger, with a pinching motion slightly shove the blade of the FlyLipp in the direction to which the fly favors. Check the fly’s action as above and continue to adjust accordingly if necessary.

Rotation Method

An alternative method of adjustment is to rotate the FlyLipp on the hook shank of the fly. Grab the head and lip of the fly in one hand and while holding the fly by the hook bend with the other, rotate it very slightly on the hook shank in the direction to which the fly favors. Check the fly’s action as above and continue to adjust accordingly if necessary.
